Are Immigrants Good for the Americans?

Illegal immigration is not beneficial to our country and we should not protect it. Legal immigration is alright but we should focus more on enforcing our laws rather than offer blanket forgiveness to those who have broken them. People coming to our country bring many issues along with them. While they are in search of better opportunities in this country, most of them come here illegally even though we have a system that they can apply for and enter legally. Illegal immigration should not be protected as it brings overpopulation, unemployment, and an increase in crime rate.

Crime rates have increased over the years as immigration continues. A pair of sociologists have found that as the rates for immigration increase so does the rate of homicidal crimes. “Violent crime increased in the United States. So that while between 1960 and 1990 the annual migration rate per 1,000 population in the United States increased from 1.7 to 3.0, during this same period the U.S. homicide rate increased from 4.8 to 8.3 per 100,000 population. This recent increase in homicide, and even more recent decline, is further reflected in the homicide rates for New York City.”(Hagan and Palloni, The National Academies Press) It is reasonable that the more people who enter the country, the more crimes are going to appear. Especially when it comes to young males as they are exposed to crimes almost all around the world. Also, not only does it make sense that crimes come from and increase in population but characteristics that immigrants possess are seen as crimes in the United States. “Theory offers little guidance in sorting out the effect of either Mexican immigration specifically or immigration, more generally, on crime. On the one hand, Mexican immigrants, on average, possess demographic characteristics, which, in the US native population, appear to be positively associated with crime.”(Chalfin, University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Science ) While it is true that most people immigrate to the United States for a better life, the fact that an increase in crime rates cannot be ignored and thus immigration should not be protected as it has not done enough to benefit the country.

Immigration should not be protected as it lead to the issue of overpopulation. While the United States is a great country it can’t be denied that every country has a limit of how many people can live in it. “According to Negative Population Growth Inc., 80 percent of the growth in U.S. population comes from immigration, legal, illegal and among American-born children of immigrants.”(Bedard, Washington Examiner) Most of the United States consists of immigrants and because of that they take up most of the resources available. Not only are the resources depleting but other issue come in from daily necessities to pollution. “With increased population, we see a direct increase in the problems our nation faces on a daily basis: pollution, over-consumption, traffic gridlock, crowded schools and hospitals, overburdened social services, unemployment, crumbling infrastructure, urban sprawl, over-development, threatened or extinct animal and plant species, and dwindling natural resources,” said said Tracy Canada, the group’s deputy director. Immigrants to the U.S. are also found to greatly increase their consumption — and their resulting footprints — upon settling here, which furthers our nation’s environmental impact.”(Bedard, Washington Examiner) While it is everyone’s human right to live wherever they choose the United States is undergoing many issues that are caused by immigration. This country cannot afford to increase the population at its current outlook. “Our nation is already vastly overpopulated,” said Mann. “The evidence is all around us: Millions are out of work, schools and hospitals are overcrowded, our natural resources are dwindling, pollution is increasing, and our infrastructure and social services are crumbling under the strain. Yet U.S. population is still growing by an average of over 6,600 people per day, and nearly 2.5 million people per year. We simply cannot afford to continue our growth. It is unsustainable, and irresponsible policies are the driving force behind it.”(Bedard, Washington Examiner) Immigration is good for those who enter but it isn’t a great thing when the country who has to accept all of them have to go through a hard time just to make sure that the country is able to sustain them and the people who already inhabit it.

The issue that immigration has that affects the american people directly is that they take our jobs. While there are people who are unemployed in the country immigrants come in and take the jobs that are available for those who don’t have one. Thus, it leads to the fact that those without employment must seek one that pays less and offers little to no benefits. “Decades of record immigration have produced lower wages and higher unemployment for our citizens, especially for African-American and Latino workers.” (Borjas, Politico Magazine) Employment is like supply and demand and with more immigrants coming in companies will be willing to offer lower wages due to the quality/skill the workers possess. “When the supply of workers goes up, the price that firms have to pay to hire workers goes down. Wage trends over the past half-century suggest that a 10 percent increase in the number of workers with a particular set of skills probably lowers the wage of that group by at least 3 percent. Even after the economy has fully adjusted, those skill groups that received the most immigrants will still offer lower pay relative to those that received fewer immigrants.” (Borjas, Politico Magazine) It is a benefit that the United States receives more worker, however, the wages that are offered are not high enough to meet the necessities of citizens and the jobs are given to immigrants rather than americans for a much lower price and therefore cause the unemployment rate to go up.

Immigration is the act of people coming into another country whether it is through a legal process or not. While everyone can enter a country if they wanted to there are certain issues that come with that decision. In exchange, the United States doesn’t receive many benefits from immigration and are entitled to protect and support it. Immigration should not be protected or supported by the United States as it brings overpopulation, increase in unemployment rates, and an increase in crime rates.
