Appeal to Ethos, Logos and Pathos Racism

Abraham Lincoln once said, Achievement has no color.””, but is that really true? In many cases of racism, people have been suppressed and kept from being able to contribute to the society. Racism is a blight and a hindrance to our development. Imagine the many things we could do if people could set aside differences and cooperate meaningfully. Sadly that is not the case. In reality, people are put down because of their heritage and genetics. By no means is racism as open as it was in the 1950s, but there is still enough discrimination to clearly see racism has latched its claws into every aspect of reality.

Racism in the workforce is one of the biggest problems faced. One study found that a component of racism was in names. Professor Mullainathan and Bertrand of the Poverty Action Lab made identical resumes and sent them off. The only difference was the name on the resume. From a frequency data sheet in Massachusetts, the professors put a white, a black, or Latino name. There were 50% more callbacks to the white-sounding names than black-sounding names and 34% more callbacks to the white-sounding names than the Latino sounding names. As more and more people get discriminated against the more they will go into poverty and debt just to support themselves and their family if they have one. Or maybe someone wants to have a family, but they do not have the job or income to support anyone other than them. There are so many stereotypes of different races and that misconception pushes people into different states. Poverty. Crime. Depression. Risky behavior. Anger.

Healthcare is another huge problem with society are we not all supposed to be treated well and efficiently in the hospital. One of the worse things about this problem is that the racist views are based on nothing at all. Only their subconscious. Many white physicians don’t realize they discriminate. Two thirds to be exact. Through the medical field, some doctors discriminate to the point of not giving minority patients the same amount of care and treatment that white people receive. For instance, a Washington University study found that pediatricians were more inclined to give black patients ibuprofen out of surgery than the stronger, more helpful drug oxycodone. Minorities end up suffering because of racism even in health care. Treatment does discriminate.

Racism doesn’t only happen to adults. Sad as it is. Schools advertise themselves as a safe environment for your child to learn and grow, correct? Don’t be so sure. Many schools end up fueling the “”school-to-prison”” pipeline. The school-to-prison pipeline is a theory that has been proven to exist by numerous studies. As children get pushed out of school because of racism they are more likely to commit crimes and end up in prison. Children of color often suffer because of biases. Black and Hispanic children are less likely to be labeled as upper-level, and more likely to be punished harshly for a misdeed. In 84 southern school districts, 100% of students suspended were black. These students aren’t getting the same quality of education a white student gets. As time goes on these racist acts leave unfadeable scars that will affect them throughout their entire life. The acts leave insecurities that affect their development and capacity to trust.

Racism, discrimination, or whatever you want to call it, needs to end. There are so many that are being hurt over and over because of their skin color. This problem isn’t only applicable to minorities even though the problem is more prevalent in minorities. Muhammed Ali once said, Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn’t matter which color does the hating. It’s just plain wrong.? Help unlatch the claws racism has dug into our society.
