For many years, rap music has been considered the forefront for raising awareness on subjects, such as discrimination and police brutality, despite these efforts there is still plenty of ways to go. That’s why Black Lives Matter movement has taking the roll to educate all Americans concerning the lethal violence that occurs against African American by law enforcement all across the country. Black lives matter does not only hope to educate white Caucasian, but also educate African American.
In February 26 2012, George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, who at the time was living in Sanford, Florida, called 911 to report a suspicious person in the neighborhood.
He would then proceed to approached person, despite the warring of the dispatcher to not engage with the suspect. What soon perused was an altercation between Zimmerman, and the suspect who was later identified as Trayvon Martin. The night concludes with death of Trayvon Martin. Some of the aftermath following the trial included rallies, protest, and confrontation with police. This aftermath happened all over the county including Zimmerman’s very own City. The unfortunate death of Trayvon Martin would be the culminate in Zimmerman being acquitted from all charges due to the lack of evidence, this one ignite the birth of Black Lives Matter.
In the summer of 2013 around the same time the verdict was given, three women (Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi) who took their struggle to social media by starting the hashtag black lives matter. The movement did not cache any momentum until the untimely death of Michael Brown who was an unarmed African-American teenager who was shot by a white police officers. According to BLM office website, they classify their action as response to state-sanctioned violence and anti-Black racism.
Our intention from the very beginning was to connect Black people from all over the world who have a shared desire for justice to act together in their communities. The impetus for that commitment was, and still is, the rampant and deliberate violence inflicted on us by the state. Thanks to Black lives matter black activism has been at an all-time high in America and has inspired thousands by being vocal about political inequality. As a result several leaders have meet with Bernie Sanders and and Hillary Clinton, the removal of the Confederate flag in public places, and the launching of campaign zero that is police reform which are consist of 10 proposals which end to reduce police violence.
Although black lives movement have Noble intentions often times they’re depicted by the media as nothing more uncivilized and destructive group. Since some of there so calmed supporters destroy and vandalized property which overshadows with the black lives matter real intentions. despite this, they have managed to keep their movement by raising awareness all over the country. Thanks to efforts from athletes such as Colin Kaepernick it has once again kept its momentum going and will do so as long as there are people to fight for equality.
