I HATE YOU KENNEDY FOX. Okay…I love you too. I’m still a little emotional from this book, give me a break people.
I submitted a request to become a part of the InstaFam for this series and these lovely authors. They were beyond gracious and welcomed me in so naturally, I decided to speed-read the first two books (Checkmate: This is War and Checkmate: This is Love) before I got my hands on this one. I was hooked from the very beginning and this book is no different.
Let me tell you/warn you about something…K & F are really great at making you physically ache for book 2 as soon as you finish the first part of a couple’s story. The last lines of This is War tore my heart out and This is Reckless did the exact same thing! Kennedy Fox knows how to end a book on a cliffhanger dangerously well.
Another thing they do incredibly well (which helps make the cliffhanger so painfully effective) is make you fall for the characters. I was so invested in the characters, their relationships (romantic and otherwise), and their lives in general. I connect so deeply with the characters in the Kennedy Fox books that I feel like they’re real people that I’m actually friends with. I wanted to hang out in the kitchen with Courtney while she bakes and steal some of Drew’s protein shakes. They’re my little muffins (hehehehe) and I was just going along reading like “now…KISS!” They also make the ‘bad’ characters super easy to hate. If you haven’t read any of these books, pick one up then come chat with me about “Mia fucking Montgomery”. OMG I hate her.
Swoon factor. Guys, Drew is so drool worthy. The fact that I didn’t salivate all over my paperback is actually amazing because he’s so hot and says all the best, steamiest things. Travis will always be my number one but oh.my.goodness is Drew amazing. Also, who doesn’t love a man in uniform?!
The story is paced really well and I flew through This is Reckless just as fast as the previous two Checkmate books. There is no shortage of drama, awwwwwww moments, baking, and banter to go along with the steamier scenes so I found there was never really a moment that I was bored or that I felt dragging on. If it weren’t for life getting in the way, I would very easily have finished this book in under a day.
Final Verdict:
I was absolutely destroyed at the end of this book. Destroyed in the best way possible. I can always count on Kennedy Fox to deliver great characters, a sexy story, and a punch right to the feels. If you haven’t tried any of their books before and you love all those things and some hot alpha males GET ON THAT. Now. And then suffer with me while we wait for This is Effortless 😉 .
