Review:
*I received a copy of this book from Raincoast in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion.*
If authors could stop writing new series for me to get emotionally invested in that would be greaaaattt. I seriously can’t keep up with all the awesome new worlds and stories. Marissa Meyer’s Renegades is no exception to that struggle. This book has everything need to hook me and I’m basically already salivating for the next instalment.
The first thing that grabbed me about this book is the system of super powers. It’s such a unique array of abilities and the way they are used. I can’t even decide which one I’d want if I could pick a power because they’re all so cool.
The characters grew on me really quickly and knowing them by their aliases made it feel like I was really friends with these super beings. If you know me you also know my heart shipped hard and fast with this one as per usual 😝.
Finally, the world was a cool setting for this story. I really enjoyed the contrast between the reality for the Renegades and the Anarchists as well as seeing the world still trying to right itself after the chaos (even though the Council would have you believe things are okay). It’s definitely a world I’m excited to see more of.
This is definitely a series I’m excited to read more from and have the rest of the world experience as well!
Author Q&A:
Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and why?
Marissa Meyer: I feel like my answer is going to change every time I get asked this, but how can you choose just one? I think invisibility could be very useful, and I LOVE Adrian’s ability to bring his drawings to life (although I’m not a very good artist, so maybe that’s a bad choice for me). And is it cliché to say “flying”? Because who doesn’t want to fly?? But okay, if I absolutely had to choose just one… I think I’d go with telekinesis. The ability to move objects with my mind would have countless practical applications, from picking up my kids’ toys at the end of the day to summoning an extra napkin to the dinner table after we’ve all sat down… the possibilities go on and on.
If you haven’t already checked it out, there is an extensive official fan site at jointherenegades.com. This new website has a “What’s Your Extraordinary Power?” quiz, a Renegade/Anarchist avatar creator, character pages, interactive discussion board, and other exclusive content. You can also take a quiz to find out if you’re a Renegade or an Anarchist!
So glad to hear you enjoyed it. And I admit, it is a struggle with series, but a good struggle 🙂
